·      AASA CRITERIA All applicants must be active members of AASA and will be measured against the following criteria:

1.     Leadership for Learning – creativity in successfully meeting the needs of students in his or her school system.

2.     Communication – strength in both personal and organizational communication.

3.     Professionalism – constant improvement of administrative knowledge and skills, while providing professional development opportunities and motivation to others on the education team.

4.     Community Involvement – active participation in local community activities and an understanding of regional, national and international issues.

NOTE: AASA considers a person who has previously been selected to still be eligible.

·       RISSA CRITERIA: All applicants must be active members of RISSA and will be measured against the following criteria:

1.    Tenure - Three years as a superintendent in Rhode Island

2.     Participation- Actively involved in RISSA activities

·      SELECTION COMMITTEE (Special Awards Committee):

1.     There shall be a minimum of five and a maximum of seven members on this Committee selected from past Superintendent of the Year Awardees, regardless of classification of membership, and active RIASA members.

2.     Any Committee members who are not superintendents must recuse themselves from discussions involving their current superintendent.

3.     There shall be no more than one inactive superintendent on the Committee.

4.     There shall be no more than one representative from any one district on the Committee.

5.     The Chair of the Special Awards Committee shall be the most recent Superintendent of the Year Awardee, (i.e., the current holder of the award).

6.     The Executive Director shall be a non-voting ex officio member of the Committee.

7.     All RISSA members will be provided a list of the eligible superintendents. An active or retired member of the association shall be allowed to nominate one or more of the eligible superintendents on the above referenced list.

8.     Superintendents who are nominated will be asked to complete a minimum of three questions prior to the meeting of the Selection Committee in July.
